Why an Identity Card is Not Your Identity

A few weeks ago we left France. My kids went to a local school that was once a convent in the village. During the 2nd world war the Nazi’s swept through France rounding up Jews. The  nuns at the convent hid several Jewish kids in plain sight disguised as local gardeners working in the convent gardens. Among the “disguising”, they gave the kids a new identity including ID cards.

One of the kids that was hidden returned to the school from New York where she now lives to talk to the kids. It was a big deal in the village. Things that happened in the 2nd world war are evident everywhere in rural France.

During the talk my kids told me that she said something along the lines of “……they created me a new identity card but I never lost my real identity”.  This reminded me of Dick Hardts classic Identity 2.0 intro at OSCON.  Identity management is a complex beast.
