Metrics that Matter

Ask a wine maker if climate change is real. This year there will be no organic wine from Burgundy. All wine makers have had to spray to prevent mildew attacking vines. Australia will have one of the worst crops in decades and as a result prices of Australian wines will rise next year. Italy (and Southern Europe) on the other hand has had constant sunshine and will experience excellent grapes and are predicting vintage wine. I’ll pay for that next year! Grape varieties traditionally grown in Bordeaux are becoming increasingly hard to get “right” despite generations of wine growing and a nations heritage that’s pivotal around its wine production The UK has won more awards for wine in the last few years at the French wine fairs than at any time in history and Spanish vineyards are now having to grow new grape varieties which were simply unheard of in history. European culture is changing.

These are metrics that matter to people in the wine industry and beyond.

Indeed. Wine metrics matters. From wine making perspective is all about initial conditions. If you got a brix 18 from juice you can get a good wine. Weather matters? Of course. Soils matters? Of course! best pinot is made off gravel soil! Where you get the best wine? Off coast of the sea, where breezes cool off grapes in the summer. It is about micro climate! That’s the same off the cost of the adriatic sea, or the pacific coast of California and south eastern austraila you’ve got consistently good wine. Ciao Marco

I recently got a Tom Peters presentation off his web site. This is one he did in Bologna, Italy (*). Just love it. I know you might like it to.
