Dear Santa

I have been a good boy all year and would like for xmas;

A GPS / Watch / heart rate monitor combo that doesn’t look like a brick or particularly “geeky”

A way to get the GPS data out (easily (XML)) so I can use it to map fitness progress but also to plot positions on a Live Map showing which country I am currently in and which countries I have been to and when on my blog. A kind of “Where in the world is he now?” widget.

The Garmin Forerunner 305 looks good. Anyone of you dark horse Triathlon type readers (I was shocked at the amount of comments about fitness today BTW) know about the data export of the Garmin or have any recommendations?

And while on GPS’s has anyone got any recommendations for GPS devices and software to add to my Samsung i600 Windows Mobile phone to turn it into an in car / on foot GPS navigation device? Must work in both States and Europe.

    what OS does your Samsung i600 run? i had an i600, but not for 2.5 years now and it ran the smartphone edition OS, which had less support for GPS than even my current i730. the i760 is out (as of 4 days ago). not sure which phone i want yet, but it will probably be a CDMA-based phone.

    if you’re looking for GPS - i have first-hand witnessed the helio ocean in action - and it is excellent. it was also reviewed to this purpose by Dave Aitel on dailydave-l. of course, neither of these will work in the EU until you folks wise up and support CDMA.

    i guess for GSM, Windows Mobile, and GPS - you can’t go wrong with the Kaiser/Tilt, which is also known as the HTC TyTN II. this is probably what you’re looking for, as inferior technology as it is.

    Data export from the Garmin is a no-brainer. There are lots of apps that support the Forerunner, so that should be your device of choice.

    Other tips would be the Suunto Duathlon or Multisport Pack - check their web site for more info. I’m not so sure about data export there, however.

    I have the base model Garmin, the forerunner 50. No GPS, but I wanted something that I can wear as a watch 24×7, not a giant geeky device I only wear when running. I love it.

    Syncing is great. I walk near my computer and it wirelessly transfers the data off and into the garmin software.

    Have you seen the tiny ipod insert for Nike trainers? You stick it in the sole of your shoe and it calculates your distance, etc, writing the data to your ipod. Great gadget - we just need to mod it and stick gps on it, a heart rate monitor and then get the beat of the music working in tune with your stride. If only I had the time to work on it…I think it would fly off the shelves!

    Does this sound familiar?

    “He’s making a list, and checking it twice?”

    He stumbled across a minor glitch. Looks like its coal for you….
