SecurityLinkUp is Now Open Source

An update to the ongoing story of SecurityLinkUp (last update here).

This application was designed to be a simple free application to manage face-to-face meetings for security folks around the world; community groups, product user groups etc. Having spoken to a number of potential user groups who have all been very positive we have gathered some good feedback. We have taken it all onboard and will be open sourcing it.

Based on the initial feedback it seems there would be a much higher adoption rate if the application was open source (under a non-restrictive license) and deployed with a free hosted experience on a site with an absolute minimum of banners/advertising. You wishes are our commands!

We decided to write it Security LinkUp in the first place to fill a need (the ISM-Community and other groups are struggling to easily create and manage local security group meetings) and to get some karma from the community at large. It turns out to build it out and add the features most folks want is beyond the scope of our initial intentions and as an early stage startup we can’t commit the resources needed to take it beyond where it is today. So this seems like a good like a win-win. We deploy it with code and a free hosted version and those that want advanced features can code them up (and hopefully give back in the open source spirit). Of course it goes without saying someone can pay us and well build their desired features / enhancements.

We will use CodePlex to manage the code, feature requests and bug-tracking (that site URL will be here). The license is an MIT license. We need to unhook a few things this weekend and next week. VCS/ICS calendaring support and RSS/email alerts needs to be added and a few bugs ironed out but apart from that its functionally complete.

I’ll blog next when all the code is up and its deployed. If you are a .NET developer and want to join an open source project of course drop me a mail!

Enjoy!
